GSK gets vaccine deal for Relenza

GSK has won a fairly sizable deal from the federal government in conjunction with all 50 states.

The two-year contract allows 59 jurisdictions to purchase, at a federally negotiated price, up to 15.5 million antiviral treatments and receive a 25 percent federal subsidy.

The contract is part of the HHS program to assure that the country has stockpiles to cover at least 25 percent of the U.S. population in case of a flu pandemic.

This follows in the footsteps of a similar deal with Roche for Tamiflu last year. This is in conjunction with the 44 million treatment courses of Relenza that the government has begun stockpiling without contributions from the states for later distribution in case of a flu pandemic.
